Oracle Enterprise Manager 12C : What is This ?

OEM is a management solution for managing complete oracle environment. This can be used to monitor and manager various resources like hosts, databases, listeners, application Servers,
HTTP Servers and Web applications.

IT systems these days are increasing very fastly. IT systems may require huge number of systems that are separated geographically. Managing these along with hosts, applications servers, web servers and applications deployed into these is a complex task.OEM helps in handling this task in an efficient manner.

OEM
  • Extracts information needed for critical and timely decisions
Like why is the host getting down, why are the transactions taking long time to run
  • Manages number of systems in an efficient way
Systems can be arranged in groups based on their working area. Groups can be created like database, application server, web server, and host groups etc and also based on functionality area like finance, geographical area etc.
  • Manages the ecosystem which may include third party software, storage system etc
  • Reduce Hardware and labor costs
  • Security
OEM not only manages system also provides various security features. It can be combined with virus software to provide virus protection. It also provides various information regarding patches that are applied or that needs to be applied. It also provides information about various policy violations and also policy implementations.

Enterprise Manager provides the tools and framework needed for you to manage all the pieces that comprise your system and hardware environment.

The Major components are
Managed Targets: Objects such as Databases, Application Servers, Web Servers, Applications and Oracle agents (Oracle Net listener and Connection Manager) are the objects called Managed Targets administered using OEM framework. They can be added or deleted when needed.

Oracle Management Agent (Management Agent): Responsible for monitoring all targets on the host, for communicating that information to the middle-tier Management Service, and for managing and maintaining the host and its targets

Oracle Management Service (OMS): A web component interface used to monitor and control managed Targets.
Or
A J2EE Web application that renders the user interface for the Grid Control, works with all Management Agents in processing monitoring and job information, and uses the Management Repository as its data store.

Oracle Management Repository (Management Repository): Storage of configuration and monitoring information collected about the managed targets. It comprises two table spaces in an Oracle Database that contain information about administrators, targets, and applications that are managed within Enterprise Manager. The Management Service uploads to the Management Repository the monitoring data it receives from the Management Agents. The Management Repository then organizes the data so that the data can be retrieved by the Management Service and displayed on the Grid Control. The Management Repository consists of schema definitions, RDBMS jobs, and stored procedures running inside an Oracle database.

Various pieces of information is stored including,
Configuration details about the managed targets
Historical metric data and alert information
Client and Web server response time information
Managed target availability information
Product and patch inventory information
